GCC JFK Tourism Academy
The JFK Tourism Academy began in 1995 with a core group of teachers. One teacher who co-pioneered the academy concept is still in the Academy. Others have been recommended and invited based on their interest and commitment to participate actively in the Academy’s meetings and activities.
The JFK Tourism Academy is part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Guam Community College (GCC) and follows a school within a school concept. Teachers from the GCC and the Guam Department of Education are teamed up to provide the best classroom learning with tourism and hospitality as a central theme. The Academy specializes in education and training for future careers in the travel and tourism industry.
The Academy students are given the opportunity to explore the different aspects of the tourism industry both locally and around the world. Students will be able to choose a specific track in the academy beginning with their sophomore year: Lodging Management Program (LMP) or ProStart. Both tracks offer hands-on training, fun-filled learning projects, job training programs, and a chance to compete in an on- and off-island competition.
Students will be given an opportunity to apply for GCC’s Work Experience program. Grades, attendance and citizenship are just part of the eligibility requirements. This program will give you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn high school credit as early as your junior year. Participating industry companies may also offer a paid, internship program. The Academy encourages college path students and career path students to enroll. Our program is designed for students to learn about employment skills and finding the right career to start their future.
